themselves part of some vast silent majority while at the same time congratulating themselves as being such exceptional people, so perceptive, so unique.

Not all by far, but enough are of this type to make the characterture believable. Far too many are almost pure ideologues with little to no practical experience in organizations or accomplishing difficult tasks with difficult people. From personal experience in both large programs outside politics and some political efforts some people get some sort of satisfaction of being always the minority that is truly "right" no matter how far the overall window gets pushed in their direction. It seems to be much more about a self image of being the  only sober person in a car of drunks than getting in the driver's seat. As I mention elsewhere:

Unfortunately that accomplishes about as much as being the one sober passenger in a car of drunks. You will be in the crash too. Perhaps you will die "being right" but you accomplished dip shit.

I have watched similar types in large programs, some in technology, where the very concept of finding areas of agreement and working with moderate opponents to extend "good" while putting "best" as a goal is something they cannot deal with. The usual result is they sabotage, actively or by their lack of support, progress. In those non-political, at least in the sense we are dealing with, projects and programs those few often were more difficult to deal with and caused more damage than strong opponents. One common outcome was that opponents began using the opposition of such people to convince the undecided or neutrals that "even their supporters are against this" with sometimes devastating results.

On a pragmatic level such "supporters" are often the most deadly and destructive agents against progress.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
