...that one will go to hell no matter how moral and pure he is unless he accepts Christ as his savior  was never really feeling moral or pure to begin with.(To my knowledge, Christ never said people could be corrupt and immoral and still be saved. You had to make effort to change and become moral. He set examples with his own behavior. To me, following Christ's example has to do not just with talking but also with behaving and living like Christ did- which was never about "armies" and/or "war." It was about rejecting materialism and having compassion for all living beings, including for one's enemy.) So this "born again" business becomes a self-fooling device to help overcome the pain and the guilt of knowing that one is not a moral person. The opium of the evangelical b.s. convincing these people that they are "saved" regardless to the violence they have inside their hearts must be addictive.

I feel sad for this marine. He was obviously a hero, coming home from Vietnam with a major PTSD (the result of experiencing violence), he must've found the only way to survive the demons of PTSD in his head: The drug of "Being reborn" offered by the charlatans who use such profound spiritual phenomena for the purpose of enriching themselves. The corrupted instant version of "being reborn" works like instant coffee. No brewing time or real stuff needed. Just accept this and that and forget the past and the nasty stuff you hold inside. No need to do the real work of becoming truly a moral person or healing the demons inside, because you might never make it. So, take this pill and bingo, you are saved. Now join the "Lord's army" and continue with your hate and violence without the inconvenient pestering of feeling guilt.

What I see in this marine's eye means that.
