    "All of it would take place out of sight. And yet the pain would be as bad. Worse perhaps, since there were no supporting witnesses. No connections to humanity."

    This reminds me of something my dad said about the Great Depression, that men were able to keep their sanity and dignity by dressing for work every day and going to stand in the lines for work assignments that usually did not come in sufficient numbers.  It held men together in shared misery, much like combat galvanizes the relationships of soldiers in war.
