    don't get "little or nothing;" they get a benefit relative to the amount they paid into the system. It's still possible to qualify for food stamps, etc, while on Social Security.
       The idea of Social Security from the start was to keep it distinguished from a "welfare program" in order to get maximal support from the public. "It's not a welfare benefit, it's money you earned and paid into the system so it would be available when you needed it." The (mostly) Republican opponents since Roosevelt's time have tried to portray it as a welfare system, and that meme is always in people's heads, even when they know better. High-income workers don't "deserve" more; they earned more, and consequently paid more into the system. That's how it was intended to work from the time it was established.
