and I've come across a lot of names I'm used to seeing here in completely different contexts, it makes me want to ask everyone a question about computer use and ADD. Just a few weeks ago, I read several papers from scholarly research journals and a few less formal articles by professional mental health people and educators discussing studies showing that heavy computer use, especially heavy game playing, makes ADD, and concentration in general for people who don't have ADD, worse. There is not 100% agreement with this, but only a very few disagree. Now, I wonder what people here think about this. I think I may have noticed my concentration diminishing as I read more and more short diaries and comments and fewer books. Anyone else notice this?

    •  Interesting question (3+ / 0-)

I don't have ADHD, and I don't play computer games (just the old games like Solitaire) so I'll let others chime in if they're still around.

That said, I have noticed that it's harder for me to concentrate on what I'm reading or writing on the computer if there's a TV or radio on. My poor TV spends most of its time muted.

    •  It's a matter of stimulation. (6+ / 0-)

I have to crank up the tunes in order to get housework done.

      Why?

I need the stimulation to stay on task, or I'll "take a break" and then another break..and another...and the housework will not get anywhere close to done.

Many computer games provide lots of stimulation.  People who need that stimulation will be drawn to them, people who only need a brief period of diversion won't.

When I was a child and supposed to be doing housework, I would read almost EVERYTHING I ran across.  Labels, product boxes, magazines, books - everything.  Took me forever to get stuff done sometimes because I latched onto every tiny piece of stimulation that I could.

Sounds familiar.  I spent some of my childhood growing up on a farm, so taking care of the animals was one of the few things I could do without losing focus.
