    insurance reform legislation consisting of stuff with broad popular, even "bipartisan," appeal like ending rescission and requiring coverage of pre-existing conditions...

    Get that passed and implemented, then try for real reform of our healthcare system, as opposed to our insurance system.  The President and Dem leadership could have stumped the country pushing hard for single payer, calling it Medicare-for-all. I'm personally convinced that Medicare-for-all could have been sold to a majority of Americans, but even if I'm wrong, the crucial insurance reforms wouldn't be held hostage to it.

    What about the "30 million uninsured Americans?" Last time I looked, they still aren't insured anyway.

    When you triangulate everything, you can't even roll downhill...
