I ever heard was some law professor getting up in in the wake of Thomas's deplorable reference to lynching, and condemning it, saying in effect, "If his bid for Supreme Court justice doesn't survive this nomination process, what's the worst thing that will happen to him? Well, worst case, he'll go back to being a D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals judge--a job with a very comfortable salary, great benefits, and excellent job security. When African-Americans were lynched, their homes were destroyed, they were maimed, and they saw their loved ones killed. How DARE Thomas use the lynching analogy to describe his fate?"

      If it's
      Not your body
      Then it's
      Not your choice
      AND it's
      None of your damn business!

on the part of Bush the Elder, I always thought. Hey, an AA justice, who's also a mediocre conservative hack! Winning combo!

I also heard a rumor (and I'm clearly stating that it's a rumor) that Thomas' tenure on the SC has been decidedly unimpressive--not from an ideological perspective, but from the standpoint of job competence. He doesn't write well, say sources I've heard. His arguments and briefs and decisions and such are a mess.
