        to improve their rocket technology with military applications, then there couldn't have been an arms race because they wouldn't have had launch vehicles for ICBMs.  After all, everybody imported Hitler's rocket scientists after the war to work on their projects, this wasn't purely about space.

        The space race was a public face of the competition, part of the propaganda wars, just like Olympic teams, development projects in third world countries, etc.  But I don't think Sarah was thinking that deeply.

        Plus, the arms race alone didn't do in the Soviets, they did it in Afghanistan with a little bit of help from us to fund the other side.  Funny how we can't even learn from our own playbook.
