I can't think of a good reason why a 17-year old American girl should be attending -- or even just observing -- anti-government rallies in a host country.  Even the best 17-year olds are not psychologically mature enough to exercise great judgment in a situation like that.

Jeez -- I'm nearly 40 and I'm not sure I'd use the best judgment if I got into trouble in that sort of situation!

    •  I'm not as worried about her judgment there (6+ / 0-)

as I would be the riot police.  When protests turn violent, whether started by protestors or police, things escalate.  Already we're hearing of foreign journalists being beaten and arrested by Egyptian police, even after pointing out they were foreign journalists.

Kinda the whole "I trust him/her, it's everyone else I don't trust" argument for parents/partners lol.  And thus far it sounds like we have reason trust her daughter isn't going. :)

In Israel.  Well, actually the Bethlehem, When I was 16.

That was before the First Intifidah.  Not really much of a protest. More a rally.

Left a lasting impression on me.  I was impressed by the anger of the participants, the apathy of most the people, and the particularly stupid conflict between the young Israeli soldiers and Palestinian youths at one checkpoint to get into the plaza where the protest occurred.

The lasting impression: Plubius, You Ain't In Kansas Anymore.
