    When Republicans talk about balanced budgets and belt-tightening by both households and the state, I'm amazed no one points out that a household who always spends as much as it earns is a daft one.

    Prudent households build up savings in good times to survive bad times. A household comparison would actually be an argument for unbalanced budgets, for surpluses and deficits.

      Bush's tax cut was justified in part to get rid of that extra surplus that was only holding our economy back.  Of course, it was pennies of surplus to dollars of tax cut, but the fact is, republicans would rather see us running a constant shown by what they did for the six years they had complete control of the government.

      Nobody ever bombed a pro-life office.

        those surpluses - makes you run out and spend all kinds of money on your pet programs. Of course, the deficit never stopped the Repubs - when they were in power.

        In the end it all seems to be words said so those in power can do what they want.
