    I'd attribute a bit of it to the cultural benefits of real social safety nets if I had to make a semi-educated guess. Especially with all the work that's been done to show how periods of great income disparity line up with periods of severe political and social polarization.

    Europe in the post-war era has just made more humanitarian developments, and I'd have a hard time believing that wasn't part of the atmosphere you describe. Being more heavily tied together economically must certainly contribute to these attitudes as well.

    What are your thoughts (sports fights aside - different animal altogether)? I've really enjoyed your insight in you comments here.
