  •  As an agnostic, I'll allow "intelligent design".. (5+ / 0-)

If the "design" part was creating the mechanisms of genetic mutation and evolution and then going "hands off."

The idea that some celestial magician waved his hand and every creature now in existence was created whole....not so much.

That's essentially deism. God as a creator of the universe, but without any personal involvement.

That's where the religionists really go wrong with their "god of the gaps" arguments. They poke all this holes in science (or try to) and then say "Our god did it". But you can't get from deism to theism - let alone to Christianity specifically. And creation still doesn't justify any of their doctrines for how we are supposed to live.

      •  Heck, most religion is "magic." (1+ / 0-)

Which I define as rituals designed to keep you safe.

Whether it's eating little wafers and sipping wine....getting dunked in a tub of water....wearing a white shawl with black fringe...channing specific phrases at specific times of day.....swinging pots full of perfume to and fro....slicing the throat of a lamb, or a bull....wrapping the dead in linen....wearing the skin of an animal you've killed....

It's all a way to do what people have tried to do since they first became people. I do this and the "gods" will smile on me. I fail to do that and they'll kill my crops, kill my kids, kill me.

I mean, do people really believe that an entity that could create the entire universe really cares whether we wear skullcaps or veils or turbans?
