    ... public or private.  The idea that government is inherently more wasteful, or stupider, than private enterprise has gained acceptance through decades of effective propagandizing, but that doesn't make it true.

    The notion that the profit motive somehow makes you more likely to produce good outcomes, not just for owners, but for society in general, now appears such a calcified article of faith in American public discourse that nothing can disprove it.  Not even a catastrophic failure like the 2008 banking implosion, whose architects forgot, for about five minutes, Ronald Reagan's homily about the "nine scariest words."
