Lawrence Wright's "The Looming Tower" describes how repressive actions by Mubarak's gov't against the Muslim Brotherhood helped to radicalize victims of that repression. I think it's quite likely, given the Muslim Brotherhood's experience as victims of state violence, injustice, torture, human rights violations, corruption of the democratic process, nepotism, and so on, under Mubarak, that the Muslim Brotherhood will be a strong ally in affirming the importance of human rights and democracy.

The US is tragically good at missing opportunities to support potentially strong allies for freedom, justice and democracy when they arise, particularly in the Middle East. I hope they are capable of recognizing and supporting this opportunity.
