    the discontinuity is on self-reflection, i.e. I'm not convinced, at a conscious level, that a dolpin lazes around the ocean wondering "why are we here ?", "what's it all about ?".

    of course the ultimate question is really, "why is there anything ?".

      One of the tests they give animals is to put a mirror in front of them and see how they react.

      Dolphins are one of the few species (which include our own) where they figure out the reflection is of themselves.  This shows, among other things, that they have a mental concept of "self".

      So dolphin philosophy isn't so unlikely, me thinks.

      What Kingston sees in a mirror, however, Lir only knows.
