    The US was terrified - not anxious, terrified - about Soviet expansion into Iran.  Ike was a strategic general who had just finished the largest war in history, and what he saw on the horizon was something that would have made all his work and all the deaths in that war pointless.  It's very difficult for us to imagine that climate, with the bulk of a totalitarian nightmare state looming like a tsunami over the nations of the Earth - it seemed apocalyptic to American leaders of the time, even if the fears later proved exaggerated.  By Ike's judgment, if the USSR gained control of Iran, it would be checkmate for the world.  He made a decision as a general, and I understand it even though it proved to be the wrong one.  

    Man goes into cage, cage goes into politics. Shark's in the politics. Our shark.
