  •  We Were Killed for 2 YEARS By That Gap Because (8+ / 0-)

some of us were pointing out the entire time that while the Republicans were preparing for the midterm election that was actually pending, Dems were preparing for a Presidential election by cooling down the activist part of the base and governing & messaging --when they bothered-- for the moderates who don't show up in a midterm.

    •  Leadership failure. (0+ / 0-)

I fault Reid most of all, Obama a close second, Pelosi next.

It became undeniable very soon after Obama took office that the GOP would agree to nothing useful. Thus it was imperative that we have an agenda ready to go as soon as we got 60 Senators. Kennedy was already out when Franken took office in July 2009, which means we didn't get 60 till Paul Kirk was appointed to Kennedy's seat in September '09. We got some agenda items through, but each one was significantly compromised and watered down, because of the Blue Dogs.

It was also apparent very early on that the Blue Dogs were going to be big trouble, and that leadership would have to be ruthless with them to keep them in line. Reid-Obama-Pelosi just weren't ruthless with them, instead indulging their egos. Maybe the realities of the Senate rules just prevent leaders from exercising that degree of control. If so, then it's unrealistic of me to blame the leaders. But I didn't even read any rumors of any attempts to discipline the Blue Dogs.

Yeah, I know Pelosi's in the House and the really problematic Blue Dogs were in the Senate. But the legislation those Senators wanted had to go through the House, which gave Pelosi some leverage, if she'd been willing to piss off enough people to use it.
