If attacked is not to rush into Iraq that would be suicide. I believe Iran can move much more discreetly by attempting to slowly destabalize the region, to a much greater extent. Iran would do well to try to bring down both the house of Saud and Pakistan. This would leave a huge security problem on the hands of the U.S and they could, through a series of strategic moves (I won't go into great detail now) become the leaders of a Middle-Eastern Union. This has been what I have seen for quite sometime. Aside from a coalition, well into the future, between Iraq and Iran there will be a coalition in the Middle-East that will vastly marginalize the American role in the region.
The world is quickly becoming a world of unions. Economically and maybe not as obvious Militarily. I am not sure that a few years down the road we will be looking at nation V. nation; rather a League of Nations V. a League of Nations

Archduke Ferdinand comparison has been made already.  Welcome back to the multipolar world.

I, like you, think the mullahs will respond in a manner that we, at least, aren't war gaming. Perhaps they have a way to get to Israel that doesn't involve missiles (which is what every expects them to do). But a strike at Saudi Arabia would be very manageable--and fairly devastating to the US, if Iran can prevent the US from getting Iraqi oil out.
