's. The time of idealizing the nuclear family with mom in the apron at home and Father Knows Best.

A contributing factor is probably the aftermath of WW2 when women flooded into the vacated workforce, and then as the men came back we faced the prospect of a ruinous unemployment problem if 10 million soldiers started looking for work with so many jobs now taken.

As an exercise I recommend watching a progression of the better known teen-oriented movies from the mid 50's thru the late 60's and watch the progression of girls/women from supporters-[and manipulators]-of-men obsessed about reputation, to confident members of the work force and professions, and aggressively sexual.

I lived through this period as a late teen & young adult and the change was jaw dropping.

It would take more years before women could get credit, buy houses and such. Scientists can't yet envision a time when they may be Constitutionally guaranteed equal rights.

Oh you weren't limited to mopping the floor. You could be a nurse too. And a teacher --till you married.

to watch the movies of the late 1940's and 1950's to see the lessons they were trying to teach about sex roles. It's rarely subtle and can be pretty depressing.

I could have been a soldier... I had got part of it learned; I knew more about retreating than the man that invented retreating. --Mark Twain

were worse in that regard than those from the 20's and 30's.  I've always heard that there was a backlash after Rosie the Riveter went to work for the war effort, and managed the household on her own, to boot.
