  •  Meanwhile, for those who still have jobs (11+ / 0-)

in the service sector, opportunities for advancement are narrowing.

I won't name the company.  My husband works for a major retailer that has survived this mess reasonably well.  He's been in retail store-level management for many years, and is certainly experienced enough to run one of these ginormous places, but has been in the lower tier for the past few years.  There was at one point a fairly broad and generous open stair for advancement.  I just about had him convinced to try to make the next move up.

Last week, he came home after a management staff meeting deeply shaken.  He still has a job.  But his company just drastically narrowed and shortened the advancement path.  They removed intermediary tiers of store management and deleted entire positions.  The people who held them are now unemployed -- but are welcome to come back in a couple of months and apply for lower postions.  And my husband's hopes for advancement just went up in smoke.

We are ready to leave for Canada.  At least there, my over-educated self might be employable, as well as my husband.

I've been working as engineer for many years, aside from losing everything I had worked for in 2003 and being homeless for awhile, my pay has barely budged from 11 years ago.  I worked 90 hours last week and 75 hours each week the previous 2 weeks, I'm on my 20th day straight of working today (leaving in a couple hours).  As a contractor I get paid for the hours so the pay check is good but the hourly rate isn't much better than what I made as a direct hire 10 years ago ... working megahours is the only way to increase my income and I'm doing something different to expand possibilities for the future but none of it is certain.  I hate the US government for doing this to its population, I don't see any representation in it anymore only corruption and the 'unwarranted influence of money'.
