  •  You really don't think a President (1+ / 0-)

can shine a light on a heretofore limited interest topic and raise awareness? Or call the nation to exert themselves to a greater degree than before? Have you never read any of the speeches Washington, Lincoln, either Roosevelt, FDR, or even (ick) Reagan and W gave that changed the way the nation dealt with issues? The President, after all, is the only federal office holder that represents the people as a whole; if s/he wanted to, s/he can do a lot more than sit on his/her hands hoping for Congress to pass something. LBJ, to his credit, got Congress to pass incredibly divisive legislation in the teeth of severely passionate resistance by calling on all kinds of markers and pulling all kinds of levers at his disposal. Do you think none of the same kinds of motivation and methods exist any longer?
