  •  The problem with Madmen isn't the network (0+ / 0-)

    its the fact that despite the fact that all the critics gush over it, next to no one watches it.

    I'm pretty sure they want too much money for season 5, which would be the syndication season for them.

    On a low performance show like this, they should drop the carriage fee to next to nothing, take the money and run.

    If they'll cancel L&O when its due to become the longest continually running dramatized show on TV over dollars, they won't hesitate a minute over Mad Men.

    BTW, Best show on TV atm, or ever?  Cos them is fightin' words... well, even atm could be fightin' words now I come to think of it.

      once all the plays (even just during the same week) are considered, Mad Men scores rather well in number of viewers.

      Also: no one, but no one, knowledgable is predicting the death of Mad Men anytime soon.

      And as for best show on TV: well, that's obvious.

      Got to go to the store, so I don't have time to look up the links I've read that refute ya, but they've got this thing called Google...

        Unfortunately ratings mediocrity isn't good enough when you have a new juggernaught on AMC called "The Walking Dead".  AMC doesn't need the critical halo any more.  They can do bigger advertising dollars on a Walking Dead RERUN than they can an original Mad Men.

          But that's what you get for quoting a Fox executive:

          In 2009, Mad Men was second in Nielsen's list of Top 10 timeshifted primetime TV programs, with a 57.7% gain in viewers, second only to the final season of Battlestar Galactica.[45

          •  The only people that care about total viewers are (0+ / 0-)

            pay-tv cable; the care that their paying customers are finding value in their entertainment.   For regular cable the numbers that mater are the adult demos; A18-49...  None of which you list here.  It's also very important to note that the vast majority of advertisers sell on the basis of live+SD(live viewers+same day time shifters.)  Although there is a push to go to C3(live+streaming-with full 'commercial loads'.). Neilssen identifies live+7 but advertisers don't rate on live+7.   It's mostly a fig leaf;  a high increase just shows a higher potential audience in live, except the audience is picking something else to watch...in live+7s case for more than a day.

            So.. Your 'proof' contains irrelevance and probable irrelevance; total viewers and not A18-49(meaning the program squews old- or they would use the all important A demo,) and the time shifting is likely live+7;  if it was sd it would have high enough A demos.

            A combination of not enough people, bad demos and bad viewing habits make this an unattractive show to advertisers.
