The economy has given a lot of people with authority to treat people like scum, in the name of cost savings. Don't think I don't notice that the "least costly" people are also the most societally privileged!

A business that goes out of its way to make a welcome environment for its disadvantaged employees, sends a powerful message that treating people well is at the end up the day THE most important principle... treating people like human beings far outweighs saving a few extra pennies.
