  •  meta level concerns & praises... (4+ / 0-)

First, THANK YOU!  All of you who are keeping motherships afloat and child diaries trailing in the wake of the motherships...

It very much helps to know these are here, even though I am about to bring up a metalevel concern about the mothership process....

First, a bit of background on older frustration with mothership approach to news.  Way back with the BP rape of the Gulf of Mexico, the motherships came to feel (to me, maybe not to anyone else) almost like a distraction .. in the sense that they floated up and pointed to child diaries, but they didn't capture the anger and really light up more torches and enlist more pitchforks, it seemed.  I have other news channels that I track that are still showing the agony in the gulf, but the whole mess has fallen off the mainstream media radar like dead silence, so part of my frustration with the BP crap comes from the entire media-consumer cycle that let that slip by.

Contrast, in much better news, Egypt (on its own and hopefully ~also~ with our help) is lighting more fires and I do believe these motherships & childships are helping keep lively channels of communication open.  But I still feel a little of that old frustration, because there seems to end up being a sort of (oh I hate to say this because I do NOT want it taken wrong) .. a sort of staleness to some of the information that is (rightly!) accumulated in the motherships.

For example, I paged down 15-16 pages before finding links to new diaries, and while I am motivated, perhaps it might be a little off-putting to people who might need their attention & interest boosted a bit?

I don't have a complete suggestion on alteration, especially since so much of this works so well .. and the motheship absolutely HAS to start with warnings about where to place recs & comments, along with not embedding video/images... maybe having a copy of the links to "today's" in depth posts floating up there near the top, before paragraphs of news?  Like, after the warnings & link to current child diary, maybe have the current mothership link to the diaries from the last 24 hrs that are in-depth (this and this, at present), and then as those are replaced with newer links, the older links still remain down near the bottom, in the awesome, comprehensive timeline of diaries that have been building?

Basically, something that helps those readers who are hitting quick & need to keep running, so that we quickly find the diaries that "would" have been on the rec list, if the mothership wasn't helping manage the ebbs and flows of the tides of information.

Lordy, this is wordy and probably not that clear :( hopefully it comes off as constructively as I mean for it to be!

Keep up the Great Work, folks, you are providing an incredibly valuable service.

we are also talking with richard lyons about how to transition over to dk4 later this week.  i haven't explored what it has to offer yet, but think that it will offer us opportunities to archive some of what we have in the mothership.

i have been adding a little more current content in the last few diaries when i have had time and have been discussing different approaches to this with people.  if you are up for brainstorming, please get in touch.

Thanks, martini. I was thinking along the same lines exactly.

    •  this is something we're discussing, too (1+ / 0-)

as we feel the staleness ourselves. We're planning for the switch to dk4 and the ability to use groups as a way to keep things more enriched. Your thoughts and suggestions are very helpful. Thank you!
