    Kaine is a safer choice -- he won't be as "progressive" as Periello on some issues, but he'll be able to raise money without too much difficulty, and he's got better name ID state-wide.

    The bench is not really that deep though in Virginia.

    Fortunately, Obama's coattails will be available in 2012 for whoever the nominee is -- Obama will likely turn out support that doesn't typically show up for an off year election.

        In hindsight McAuliffe would have made a much more interesting general election candidate, but he also would have been running into a strong head-wind in 2009.  He might not have lost by 300,000 or so votes, but it still would have been a huge mountain for him to climb to actually eek out a win.
