  •  Webb decision is a big loss (5+ / 0-)

For all those trashing James Webb, consider:

    - he took a stand against his longtime GOP political alignment to come out and run as a Democrat

    - he courageously took on the Bush Administration on Iraq policy with a credibility few could match

    - he beat an entrenched VA Republican for that seat in a very tough and close election

    - above and beyond his political work as Democratic Senator, he is a genuine hero who has served this country and deserves all our respect

If he ran again, there is a very good chance he would have held that seat.  Now it is up for grabs.  How is that a good thing, assuming we are talking reality-based politics?

that he beat an entrenched VA Republican who was being touted by conservative publications in 2006 as a front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008.  Webb was the perfect candidate to run against Allen in that cycle, and he benefited from a perfect storm of events in the final months of that election season.

happen infrequently. in 2012 Kaine has a lock on an open Senate seat the same way Mark Warner had a lock on the 08 election. unlike a McCaskill, Obama's coattails will go a long way to helping Kaine coast to a statewide victory, and I would even bet that the VA-05 would be very competitive, and maybe make a few other districts unexpected tossups.

all things considered, of the 2006 freshman class I was least worried about defending this VA seat.
