  •  Reagan's greatest legacy... (18+ / 0-)

...may have been the ¨dumbing down¨ of America.  Since Reagan the public seems less concerned with the policies and intelligence of our leadership and more interested in its cheerleading abilities.

    •  Reagan was charming,full of optomistic rhetoric (1+ / 0-)

and divisive. He played upon people's fears and was too clever to make out-right racist statements about "welfare queens".Instead he played upon the emotions of resentment about tax cheaters.

He praised the cause of "states rights" in a 1980 campaign address in Philadelphia,Miss where 3 civil rights workers had been murdered. How cynical is that?

He flattered people's spirit of patriotism with his attacks on BIG GOVERNMENT,EVIL EMPIRES,"dirty hippies".He gave people hope too.He just didn't follow through with his principles or his policies.

Obama has expressed admiration of Reagan's ability to inspire people with hope.Obama can flatter with the best of them.

Reagan was hardly a conservative and real conservatives knew it.His economic policies began to concern them.If you have read The American Conservative as I have, you will read some of the best criticism of Reagan ever found.

I am certain Rove took notes and passed on much of Reagan's tricks to Bush.At least he tried. Its hard to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.

I like Obama best when he isn't trying to produce Reagan's charm but I can't blame him for using the best rhetorical skills to rich out to broader audience. The process is called "consensus building".
It drives the GOP nuts when he succeeds so they have to put up with The Tea Party antics to attack Obama and keep that wing of their base stirred up.

Its important that we don't join TPers in attacking Obama. They are doing a good job on their own folks.

Cynicism leads to Inactivity. Hope leads to Action.
