    If, in fact, it is adhering to Mubarak as the de jure head of state, a distinction of language but not fact, then it has aligned itself on the losing side.

    No amount of pandering to the legal niceties of constitutional restraints will alter that fact.

    If it abandons Mubarak to his fate and openly supports the people against him, then it is left with the responsibility of deposing one of their own, which may be exactly what the senior officers are choking on at this moment.

    Directive #2 should be telling.
