    •  Yeah, yeah, yeah... (12+ / 0-)

And a former SNL writer and star of Stuart Saves His Family could never become a U.S. Senator.

And the star of such classics as "Hercules in New York" and "Pumping Iron" could never become the Governor of the 5th largest economy in the world.

And a black guy with a Muslim-sounding name could never be elected President, especially after 9/11.

And a two-bit white trash idiot female mayor of a tiny town in Alaska could never come within striking distance of the White House.

Again, you're probably correct, but it is not a pipe dream or crazy talk to conceive of Giffords recovering to the point of being able to handle a run for statewide office in 2012. Unlikely, but not loopy.

More like "can see it from her front porch in Alaska" distance.

        •  What people keep forgetting is that... (5+ / 0-)

...while 70 million people voted for Obama, sixty million people voted for McCain, knowing damned well that he's ancient, has every medical problem under the sun, and that this grifter airhead would've been his second banana.

What if something horrible had happened to Obama a week or so before the election? It needn't have been anything sinister--Christ, people slip in the shower and crack their head on the tile all the time.

Presto; a week later, like that, you've got President McCain by default. McCain would likely have been so shocked by the fact that he actually won the fucking Presidency of the United States that he could have easily keeled over from a heart attack that very night.

          Voila: President Mooseburger.

The fact that we were in a position to be even that close scares the living shit out of me.

campaigning isn't physically easy. it would be insane to expect giffords to run a hotly contested senate race a year after a severe head wound.

    •  You're probably right (5+ / 0-)

In any event, if she's just today recovering sufficient functioning to ask for toast, it's hard to see how she could mount a credible Senate race, even if she eventually does have some kind of miraculous rehabilitation.

    •  Even if she does make a full recovery (4+ / 0-)

It's hard to imagine shoe could do it quickly enough and be in the physical condition to make a campaign for Senate. Even re-electoin to her seat seems a remote prospect.

      •  She'd have to raise at least, what, 12-15 million (0+ / 0-)

        almost certainly more.

recovers to the point of being able to debate, she could win on that alone......

I'd lay 10-1 that even Maricopa would vote for her overwhelmingly if she didn't run a single ad....The news would do it for her.....

She could run with 3 bucks and a chocolate bar and win if she can stand at the podium and debate whoever the republic is.....

          •  Maybe. (0+ / 0-)

But in Oregon our guy in 2008 had to raise, I think, 9 million, just for his campaign, not counting outside expenditures, and Arizona has far bigger populations.

And Arizona is a much redder state.

flow like water from all over, the cash wouldn't even be an issue.

secondly she really wouldn't need the cash, I live here and see the people and the response to her.

if she is capable of running and can get up there and debate, she wins, and I'll lay cash on it....Even hardcore teabaggers were out there laying flowers or candles or just gathering at the multiple different memorials that sprung up....the one at the Hospital was flat huge, the lawn area it covered is huge.  football field +........

All she has to do is be able to do it...and honestly though that day I would have said never, considering she's speaking again in a month, and she in reality has at least a year, she might just pull it off.....

I always knew she was a tough cookie but damn.......
