Recently, in our local paper in the middle of deep red territory; a local Baptist church published a full page hate ad against Islam.

This has spurred a flurry of LTE's, and a new one came out today that I need to answer.  I believe it is full of common misinformation about Islam and I really want to counter this stuff.

    Here's the latest letter:

    To the editor:

Remember the saying "Hey, don’t shoot, I’m only the messenger boy?" Why are people shooting the messenger when they read that the Koran teaches men to beat their wives? Look it up for yourself — Sura 4:34.

I’m glad someone is exposing that disturbing fact (only one of many) and using it to point out that the Koran is not the only or the best way to live. The man in the story (published in the Jan. 26 Bible Baptist Church ad) was told it was OK to hurt his family and, after much research, found only more confusion in his Koran.

Chick Publishers made a valid point to all men — that the way to true peace is only through the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. They then told them where to read the truth for themselves in God’s holy book (not Allah’s) and how to find new life from the one who said "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh to the Father but by me." (John 14:6)

Like all of us, that man started out wrong but found saving truth in God’s word. So, if you must object, at least send your objections in the right direction — toward the Koran.

So far, there is only one comment on the comments page blog, but it is worse:

Mohammed married a wife when she was six years old, but being a man of such high principles and all, didn't start having sex with her until she was nine.

    Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 41, # 4915, 4916 and 4917.

"They took me, made me prepared and decorated me. I was then brought to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him), and he took up cohabitation with me when I was nine."

I've been googling around to try to counter this, but feel I'm flailing when I believe there might be wonderful resources right here who could help me much more efficiently.

I know these are distortions put out by the right wing.

There is a larger question in all this:  can we make an effort as a group in DK4 - have a counter-information task force that can help us all respond to such things in our own neighborhoods?

I mean just stuff like the misinfo about the MB is rampant.  A few LTE's or responses could be really helpful in individual communities such as my small town.

At any rate, I'm still rummaging, but I'm no expert and I'm really hoping someone with more authoritative information on Islam can help me asap.

that's in the Bible-ask if they follow that to the letter and then ask why we should think all who follow Islam do the same with the Koran.
