  •  I'm not so sure about how the groups work (4+ / 0-)

When I invite someone it invites them as an editor, but when they accept their default level is member.

There are 3 levels -- admin, editor, and member. As far as I can tell members really only can send a message to the group, but do any admin stuff like read group messages and the like.

    •  I'm still working that out as well (2+ / 0-)

Sure, then invite me.  We'll both figure it out eventually...I hope. ;)

    •  Members can queue diaries to the group's queue (4+ / 0-)

but an editor or admin has to release them in order for them to post in the group's name.

Someone who doesn't want to write diaries doesn't need to be a member at all and requires no invitation, although it's entirely up to the group who should be a member. As you see, everyone can read and comment in your group's published diaries, but someone with a strong interest in the group might want to follow it, to be sure of seeing everything the group publishes.

I'm sorry; I spent all evening in the Cranky Users diary, answering this same set of questions, and I guess I'm just stuck on this track now.  Markos came by and acknowledged that they had really not explained the groups adequately beforehand.  That much was apparent from the questions, but I give him a lot of credit for saying so.

... what the difference is between adding the tag of a group to a diary I publish and putting it in the queue of that group.

Also, in the one group that I joined, I can't access the group's internal messages - clicking on the respective button gives me a "you do not have permission" error.

I like the AstroKos group idea - I guess I am a follower now - somehow groups are hard to find now! Won't be able to publish anything spectacular due to lack of equipment (apart from binocular) and living in a big city, anyway.
