low threatening sky, mild winds. Some CA Towhees, chickadees and housefinches, and the flowering currant started flowering yesterday.

Re-reading Darwin (which is always fun, as Origin is a remarkably conversational, enjoyable read) has set me worrying again over my purple finches. One of the things that Darwin realized quickly is that closely related species tend to be geographically separated. Two very closely related species in the same area tend to compete for the very same resources, and it takes little time for one with a minor advantage to become the only species in an area.

I fear that the few purple finches I see at the feeder these days are on their way out.

      •  Possibly, but you do get cases where there is (0+ / 0-)

overlap in range but both species still survive, though I cannot think of examples.
