    A good deal of the disconnect between scientists and the general public has to do with our inability to translate "science speak" into something more prose-like and filled with emotion.

    We would serve the public much better if we were able to communicate a lot more effectively about why our work is important, even when it may seem dumb or useless to the layperson.

    Luckily for a disease so striking as FOP, it's not that hard to convince the public why our research is meaningful.  But for scientists studying less visually stunning diseases, or those using yeast or fruit flies in their research, it gets to be a larger problem.
