  •  Why should they, when they are the (0+ / 0-)

beneficiaries of the research done (mainly) via taxpayer dollars at research labs in Universities and other private research labs (via Federal Grants)?

So far as I know (and UTvoter would know best) - the Federal Government funds the research, but once a line of research results in a medication or therapy, then it's sold to the highest bidder (private pharmeceutical company).

Depending upon where the research was done, the scientists running the Grant Study may have the rights to the data and/or split the proceeds with their sponsoring University, when it is sold for production.

Of course the big Pharma companies still do research - but it's not in the vein of foundational research or lines of inquiry into basic science or even new avenues - mostly they just do research that will allow them to repurpose a medication/therapy they already own the patent rights to- so that they can get another seven years of sole rights to produce (no generics allowed by any other company) and sell the medication/therapy.
