Not a perfect analogy because Gore had won the popular vote in 2000 but like Gore 04, Huckabee would probably win the primary if he ran only to face a difficult to defeat incumbent.  And Huckabee has a big personal opportunity cost.  I don't think his primary path would be very difficult but I don't think he'll run.

I also see Romney as Kerry 04.  Massachusetts, tagged a flipper, linkable to the incumbent on the issue the opposition focuses their anger on, yet still pretty likely to win the primary and lose the general.

    •  I'm with you on Romney as Kerry 04 (0+ / 0-)

Romney is kind of the obvious default candidate, but not very popular with the base. Also, as you pointed out, tagged a flip-flopper. Only Romney's case, it's actually true.

I'm not sure about Huckabee as Gore though. I don't see the base begging Huckabee to run.

Lord, could we actually be looking at a Palin candidacy?

as read on Freeperland HATES Huckabee. They call him a major Rino and refuse to support him after his release of that criminal who went out and killed people. They HATE Romney, too though so I'm not quite sure what they'll do if Palin doesn't announce. I suspect Huck will run if that's the case.

She'd have to give up too much money.  And I suspect she knows she'd lose.   Huck won't either, and Romney's MassCare will destroy him with the base.

I think it'll be Newt.  (Gag!)
