that when there is a discussion of what goes on upon federal lands that are leased, the terms of the debate get completely out of whack.

That is my land and your land too. Those are my critters and your critters too.

Those leasing the land are, in essence, renters. Not owners. Big difference in legal terms, but the terms of these kinds of debates always seem to ignore that and tip the scale way in favor of the wishes of the renter.

Real world: Try renting a house and painting it purple. The landlord will most certainly go batshit and you'll soon discover you have very little say in the matter. You lose.

Federal Land world: go ahead, rent the land for a song and then demand it be managed as if you are the rightful owner. Weak-kneed politicians will line up around the block to back you up.

You're right to be angry. We're the fucking landlords. The ranchers, who nearly to a man declare themselves rugged self-sufficient types who need no or would accept no government support, are in fact the government-subsidized tenants.

Let's end the fiction about this. If the ranchers get the land at below-market rates, they're on the government dole. They have no more right than any other citizen to express how they believe that land should be managed.

To me, their preferences ought to get the same weight that Food Stamp recipients get if they think their Stamps should be allowed to be used to buy beer.

    Thank you.

Do you write diaries? That was one GREAT fucking comment!

      Especially loved this part:

I like your writing. I would jump at the chance to do a diary with you. Email me if you would ever like to do that. Co-writing would be a marvelous addition to Daily Kos.

It rubs the loofah on its skin or else it gets the falafel again.

This needs to be a diary.

all the extractive companies getting sweetheart deals to devastate OUR land, too.

I've been dreaming of a new Hooverville encampment in Washington, but maybe a few million of us who are unemployed should be planning to set up on the land we own and take care of it ourselves in the way our agents (Interior, BLM, Forestry) don't.
