  •  We have a lot of dying trees here (6+ / 0-)

that the porkies populate, but they are dying mostly because of acid rain and drought.  Our trees are sad, and when the wind blows, you can hear falling limbs everywhere.

I had the sad experience of finding one that was dying in the road after being mutilated by a car.  That poor creature's sweet face sticks forever in my mind.

So that's where I'm coming from.  I get your point though.

Overpopulation leads to more road deaths, dead trees, disease and lots of other bad things.  With porkies it's tough since there are few natural enemies and they're not a game species so humans don't hunt them.  Like all rodents they can get out of control very easily.  I've seen areas of forests in northern Michigan that were pretty beat up in late winter by them.  I'll agree they're cute, though.  Like a prickly beaver, which by the same token can get out of control and just devastate an area of trees.

things like that.   Not an easy animal to prey upon as adults.   In years past, I'd imagine disease and habitat destruction were bigger limits on overpopulation.  They'd literally eat themselves out of house and home unless they moved.
