I have been part of efforts to drop birth-control-laden feed to control deer populations.

Deer are a serious problem in Iowa, and I'm not a fan of shooting them just to shoot them.

I recall a local lawmaker's response to the notion: He said he didn't think people would be able to appreciate as much  deer that were on birth control.

    •  There are plenty of willing hunters (0+ / 0-)

but the DNR limits the number of licenses. Cities sometimes hire bow hunters to thin the urban population.

The DNR wants a deer population that they consider optimum for hunter success, i.e. lots of deer. Unfortunately, that's not optimum for motorists. I knew a young mother who was killed as result of a collision with a deer.

The wild horse population could easily be kept in check if the BLM could shoot them, but that would freak out the horse lovers.

      •  I wouldn't like that, either. (0+ / 0-)

Contraception strikes me as much, much more humane.

My in-laws in Iowa (near Des Moines) had a deer leap into the path of their vehicle a couple of years back. It smashed up their truck, and when their air bags deployed, they filled the cabin with white powder that blocked out the windshield; they didn't even know whether they were still in the middle of the highway.

Vehicle totaled, but they escaped without injuries.

        Clearly, doing nothing isn't acceptable.
