We had a 'stop the doc' program for these recalcitrant docs.  Stop them at the door on the way in and on the way out.  When the patient is admitted and identified as appropriate for contact precautions, tell the patient and his/her family members to stop the doc.  Do it every time.

    •  No- I have never heard of such a program. (0+ / 0-)

I need to ask my nursing instructor about it.  This is a great idea.  Part of the hospital culture in which doctors are given such latitude really starts in nursing school.  You're taught to just be quiet and observe when the doctor is going about her or his business.  I need to see if the place where I'm doing clinicals has such a policy, because that sounds like a great idea.

        not where I work ;-P

I love seeing the old B&W of nurses standing when the doc enters the room. I promise you those days are gone.

That's an antiquated notion, to just be quiet and observe?!  Your role is to take care of the patient, and many many times that's going to mean protecting the patient FROM the doctor.

        •  The nurses dialogue with the doctor. (0+ / 0-)

But even then there's a lot of gladhanding.  I am just a nursing student.  We're told to just be quiet and observe.
