  •  They should concede NOTHING! (9+ / 0-)

They should force Walker to bargain! They should get at least some quid pro quo.

    •  I hear you, but please hold on (6+ / 0-)

a bit.  I'm in WI and I just found out today that this stuff about the unions is part of a 144-page budget bill that is crammed full of stuff that is going to make the rest of the state go berserk if they haven't already over the union-busting stuff.  I'm trying to follow this entire story about Walker's budget bill and I believe that the full budget has not yet been released and won't be by Walker until a week from today.  What IS leaking out is that:
      1.  Walker is going after Medicaid with a vengeance and among other things, he plans to end BadgerCare and SeniorCare, the two health insurance programs our last Governor (Jim Doyle, a Dem) put into place and that is targeted at the poor in this state to make sure that they could get health insurance and therefore healthcare (rather than showing up a ERs for their health care) If these programs are ended, this is going to mean a disaster for these folks and their children and the Seniors.

      2.  He has apparently been conducting negotiations with the Chancellor of UW-Madison with a view to spinning off that institution from the 13 other UW campuses throughout the state.  The Board of Regents appears to not have known what the Chancellor was doing (as in she went behind their backs).  The other state university campuses are going to explode about this because it could make them vulnerable to being closed due to lack of funds.  Our higher education system has been a jewel for this state and if we lose even ONE of those campuses, it will deal a real blow to higher ed. in this state.  Additionally, the UW-Madison chancellor is using as an excuse that if her campus doesn't spin off from the other smaller campuses that they she will have a $50 million shortfall in her budget and will have to raise tuition 10% a year over the next two years.

This stuff is slowly being leaked and there is very likely a LOT more to come.  So, we have a lot to deal with here and until Walker shows his full hand by releasing the actual budget he's proposing, I think there's a lot we don't know yet.  We have to be patient.

And it may only be the tip of the iceberg.

I heard a woman call in today on Ed Schultz's radio show and she said she had read the entire bill and that the union-busting stuff WAS just the tip of the iceberg and that people would be furious when they found out all that is in there.  I don't know how she got her hands on the bill, however, because I thought Walker hadn't actually released the bill.  It sounded like she "might" be a state employee (maybe through her job she was given an advance copy?).   Just based on what has leaked out so far tells me that we're in for more shocks this coming week when we finally know the full story on what Walker's got in mind for the entire state.

Oh--and I forgot one more thing!  State aid to the individual school districts will be cut $500/pupil.  There are already school districts whose school boards KNOW they will go bankrupt without that additional aid from the State.  We're gonna look like Bangladesh by the time they get through with us.

There's still nothing lost if the unions refrain from saying in advance that they will make concessions. I hope that's not the case, and that the MJS got it wrong. I hope all they're saying is that they'll bargain on benefits.

although I have to give them credit for publishing the full text of our Senator Ron Johnson's speech at CPAC over a week ago.   Four days after the speech Johnson still didn't have it up on his own website.  When I read the full text of the speech I felt like throwing up.  He said in it that "Democrats are the enemy" and "This is war, make no mistake" and "Democrats want to destroy our society."  Gag me.
