Several years ago the National Institutes of Health decided to undertake the sequencing of the genomes from many species, including about a dozen primate species. Unfortunately, the work has been underfunded and is progressing slowly.

Enter the Chinese, who are now undertaking the sequencing of the same genomes, and plan on completing them within a couple of years. They will be using a new generation of sequencing technology that should make what sounds like a pipe dream a reality.

This technology has been available for several years now, but due to the lack of funding the NIH has not been able to fully invest in such machines. (The machines themselves cost around $500k each and it would be necessary to run many simultaneously to sequence the genomes of all the proposed species.) Unfortunately, things are only going to get worse if HR1 is approved (as is), as another ~6% would be cut from this year's NIH budget.

Having just graduated with my PhD, I'm having serious doubts as to whether it would be wise to stay in the US to continue my research, or if it would be better to move to a country with a better long-term outlook on science funding.

Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity, only not as much fun.
