    •  Options... (6+ / 0-)

...this is what immediately comes to mind - trying to go in order of cool to hot, and include multilateral and unilateral action:

      1. Statement by President Obama, the UN Security Council and key nations in the region calling for an end to attack on protesters.

      2. Statement by above calling for Qaddafi to step down and make assurances that he is not seeking to build dynastic rule.

      3. Threat by the above to quarantine Libya and set up blockade with the goal of ending all international trade in and out of the country.

      4. Threat by the above to take military action to end violence against protesters if Qaddafi does not provide firm evidence to the international community that he has stopped using violence against protesters (and will not use violence against them moving forward).

      5. Immediate action by the above to take military force to end violence against protesters, but then immediately withdraw after militias are disarmed (leaving Qaddafi in power).

      6. Immediate action by the above to take military force to end violence against protesters, arrest Qaddafi to await charges in the Hauge, and set up interim government to ensure peaceful transition to democracy.

      7. Immediate action by the US and coaltion of international countries - outside of the auspices of the UN - to take military force to end violence against protesters, arrest Qaddafi to await charges in the Hauge, and set up interim government to ensure peaceful transition to democracy.

      8. Immediate action by the US only to take military force to end violence against the protesters, arrest Qaddafi to await charges in transition government in Libya, and oversee the implementation of the transition government until Libya has its own self-functioning democracy.

Let me know if I left something out.

about "no fly" option - this should also be in the poll (between 2 and 3).

that will publish at 8 am.  unfortunately, i missed your final option and the new dk4 poll layout is a bit dense, but it is there.

for the record, i do not agree that a liveblog would be exclusive of action.  this is a construct that was imposed on this liveblog after i stepped away from it.  it is not how i envisioned this liveblog to evolve when i started it, and i disagree strongly.  democracy is particpatory.  it is never enough to simply stand by and watch.

became an action free zone.  I'm with you on this one, I think it's the wrong way to go.  At least they started providing links to the action diaries.

I refuse to represent my political beliefs using numbers. It isn't accurate, nor is it helpful. But I'm around a -10 on both scales.

very frustrating when you consider what people are going through in the middle east and north africa.

please give the diary a rec and a comment if you haven't already.  thanks!
