  •  what do you mean about it backfiring (6+ / 0-)

my feeling is that we have reached that point already.  ghaddafi has murdered hundreds of libyans and doesn't show any likelihood of stopping.  we have heard that he has done airstrikes on cities, has foreign mercenaries assasinating anyone on the street, hunting people down, killing doctors in hospitals....  i agree with the former english foreign minister who sees ghaddafi as a threat to world peace.  he taunted us all tonight with that little film clip, sent his son on television last night to threaten genocide and then made good on it today.  he is committing crimes against humanity, how much worse can it get?

    •  I'm talking about the people on the fence (0+ / 0-)

In Iran, we were all gung ho about the protesters and it allowed Achmedinejad (not even close, I can't spell) to present the protesters as foreign pro-US foreign agents screwing up our glorious country. So you see the rest of Iran turn against the protesters and stirred into a patriotic fervor like we were after 9/11.

In Egypt or other countries we support, our pressure can have an effect, but it could backfire in countries like Iran. Libya is an in between case since Gaddafi is certainly not a US supported dictator, but he has grown much closer to the US since 9/11.
