  •  I'm glad this is making the rounds (15+ / 0-)

My wife and mother-in-law are both teachers and this was in an NEA newsletter years ago.

Seriously, if teachers are going to get the shaft, then they ought to just become independent contractors and bill the district for their time and expenses.

People need to treat teachers like professionals.  we treat high school kids who wipe up tables at a hamburger place with less scorn than our nation's teachers.

Sure, I'm grumpy, but I'm also a fun, fit, classy guy.

    •  I always think of my hometown in MN ... (4+ / 0-)

My brother worked for a small town newspaper.  His boss, the editor -- the person responsible for the whole paper -- regularly worked 60-70 hours/week.  (The paper is really owned by a huge media conglomerate corporation in another state.  God forbid they should have paid him any sort of decent rate.)

The editor's wife was a full-time teacher in the local grade school.

      They had three children.

And they still had to live on assistance because they weren't making enough money.

On another note, many of the teachers in my current town have to get second jobs -- at Wal-Mart and such places -- because their teaching jobs don't pay enough to live on.

So, yeah!  Let's attack teachers instead of ... oh, say ... Wall Street bankers and CEOs!

I started volunteering in the local Habitat for Humanity office. I realized that a teacher with a stay at home spouse and 2 kids would qualify for a Habitat House. That is wrong. And my bosses wanted me to get, and pay for, a master's degree to teach beginning classes.
