  •  Ezra's presumption is for centrism (3+ / 0-)

His column implies, though it does not state, that "extreme" positions are bad and the Obama's cautious centrist position is the other alternative.  He does not compare what liberals want Democrats to do vs. what teabaggers and Kochs want Republicans to do in terms of their likely popularity.  This may just be sloppy writing, as Ezra makes these distinctions in his conversations with Rachel Maddow, for instance.  But the clear implication that the Obama administration's centrism is the preferable alternative.  It ignores the obvious fact that centrism in response to right-wing extremism produces pretty deeply conservative results.

As evidenced by the 2010 midterms.

Liberals and progressives have been making this argument ever since Obama's inauguration, but the WH either prefers to ignore it or they believe their strategy is better, in spite of the election results.

about Obama's actions. The Republicans position was tax cut for the rich or nothing else passes. Nothing. No votes on anything. You want START Treaty; no.

They also said NO MORE stimulus; no more spending. No unemployment extensions unless they are paid for. Raise the taxes on the lower 95% of Americans; we don't care. (In fact they thought they would benefit by it. That's what they hoped for so they could "prove" Democrats raised your taxes.)No extension of funding to keep the government going....

You don't recognize Ju Jitsu. Obama probably got

I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... I'm asking you to believe in yours. Barack Obama
