  •  You can't camp on the Mall (2+ / 0-)

    anymore.

    •  All the more reason to do so (5+ / 0-)

If legions of homeless and jobless Americans arrive, day after day, the rules about camping will be awfully difficult to enforce.

could be done and what would happen.  Several hundred thousand people at least would need to get there without anyone knowing that they were planning to do it.  The thing is that the Park Police are really brutal.  The other forces in the area are "ok", but they have tremendous power and doing anything disobedient on Federal property can carry ridiculous penalties.

IIRC the Mall became something of a tent city during the Great Depression.  But it wasn't illegal or tightly controlled the way it is now.

    •  Yes, you can. Just because the elites can make (1+ / 0-)

their own rules, so can the poor. That ground belongs to the People, not the government.

      •  Honestly, people should have (0+ / 0-)

thought about this stuff during the Reagan years and fought a lot harder to prevent the Patriot Act, among other things, from passing.  That Mall isn't yours or mine anymore.

        •  Yes, it is. No law can take the earth from you. It (0+ / 0-)

is the property of the Creator for us to use.

        •  That's a great idea. Damn... why didn't (1+ / 0-)

          I think about that before:

To every millionaire who decries they don't want their grandchildren paying for the deficit, I say: PAY MORE TAXES NOW and your grandkids won't have a deficit burden.

          •  Look - DC is in almost a complete (0+ / 0-)

police state.  It is amazing to me really.  And pretty much everyone has gone along with it.  I think that it is outrageous, but it is the reality.

Growing up and up until Clinton passed the law banning alcohol on Federal property, a group of my friends would set up "camp" early morning on 4th of July right next to the National Gallery.  We would bring kegs, barbecues, a full spread of food, blankets, pillows, pies, ice cream, coolers, water, etc.  We would cook out all day long and have a great time.  There's pretty much not one single item - not even the water - that you can bring to an event on the Mall anymore.  It is freakin' crazy.  We've lost our right to picnic all in the name of preventing terrorism.  It is crazy and people have just accepted it as "ok".

In any case, that's not my Mall.  My Mall was closed some years ago and replaced by a creepy anti-picnic, police state, anti-fun zone.

    •  It won't be camping. (0+ / 0-)
