Debby, mrblifil, LokiMom seem to have misapprehended the underlying motivation for this man's behavior. He has a morally consistant worldview, one so alien, it is hard to grasp it's Cthulhulain geometry but it coherent, at least in his subcoscious, whether or not he can articulate it.

His life has been one of submission to authority. He has worked hard and by dint of such efforts himself garnered a modicum of personal authority as a father, at least, and perhaps a low level functionary. In such a system his failings are his own.

Though not necessary for the conservative worldview, when it comes to anti-rights sentiments, a religious submission to God's authority over earthly matters is an important ingredient.

The primary implements of this authority based worldview are protection and consequences.

The protection is based on control, control of the situation, control of oneself and control of ones subordinates. As long as everyone follows directions everything will work out according to plan.

If you stray from the prescribed path you must endure the consequences as a sort of object lesson for yourself and others.

So that "conservative" mindset which protects the child from abortion is the very same one that insists upon consequences for the profligate mother. She must endure the privations associated with her sub-optimal decision making. She must bear the child, raise it up and she must do so within the confines of the authority structure through which she will receive the grace of charity...if she is deemed properly authority responsive.

    (-9,-9) pragmatic incrementalist :-P
