    in my history classes.

    We did a unit on labor and one day was devoted to the songs of labor unions and the stories behind them.

    "The Preacher and the Slave" was a take-off on the spiritual "The Sweet Bye and Bye". The Starvation Army, of course, referred to the Salvation Army.

    In those days people would toss their donations on the Salvation Army drum. The song suggested that when you had donated all your money to the Salvation Army that the police would then arrest you for vagrancy.

    The "pie in the sky" references always raised questions in class about the role of religion in suppressing the genuine aspirations of working people.
