  •  It's not all there in the green peppers, but (6+ / 0-)

some of it is.  Green pepper are immature fruit from the Solanaceae family, like tomatoes and eggplants, and all of these plants have both poisonous parts and somewhat bitter immature fruit.  The more immature the fruit the more bitter it is.  So with green peppers it has more to do with their immaturity than anything, but removing the skin does take some of that bitter edge off.

OT, what has happened to the happy band of taggers we had in DK3?  I added Rec tags to the diary, and I've had to do that a lot lately, which didn't used to be the case.  Color me puzzled about the loss of taggers.

    •  this explains (5+ / 0-)

why sometimes I see peppers that are green with parts turning red at local food stalls. I guess I intellectually knew it has something to do with maturity, but couldn't get my head wrapped around why the farmer didn't wait to pick them  a little longer so they could get a better price. But then again, I suppose I'm silly to think that a person looks at each pepper before it's picked a makes a decision about whether to pick it. Silly, silly me.

Tagging - what's protocol now? Is rec the top list? I was thinking that the "recently rec'ed" was a little different - ???

      •  Yes, Recommended is the top list, (6+ / 0-)

and only the first page of that list.  If you'll notice, now there is a "Next" button at the bottom of the Recommended list that will take you back through many pages of diaries, but it's only the ones that make it onto that top page that are actually "recommended."  This probably explains why so many diaries are going untagged (or occasionally wrongly tagged as recommended when they weren't actually on the list.)  I think people are confused about what all the new lists are.  Here's a handy guide:

Community Spotlight:  Diary Rescue.  This is diary rescue in its new 24/7 format, with diaries rescued in something close to real time.  Instead of in the old days when we only had a once-a-day list that often had diaries that you couldn't rec because the time had expired, the diaries there are pretty fresh so you can rec and comment in them.

Recommended List:  The first list on the right side of the page, right under your little "Welcome Back" box.  You can click through pages of diaries that had some quick recs out of the box or had lots of recs over time, and some of those diaries were recommended and fell off the list into those pages.  But the ones on that top page, the list of 12, are the Recommended list.

Recently Rec'ed:  These are diaries that have had at least one Kossack with TU recommend them and that puts them into that list.  They aren't "Recommended" diaries, that is they're not on the "Recommended" list.  This is a partial "Recent Diaries" list.  This was done to keep spam and troll diaries from getting any traction.  I think it just confuses the issue, but no one asked me so I just go around explaining it.

The "Diaries" tab:  This is the tab at top of the FP titled "Diaries" and it is the entire Recent Diaries list, spam and trolls and all.  It's a much longer list than what you could see in DK3.  It's where I spend the majority of my time, doing Community Spotlight.  We're prowling that list for goodies to go in that little CS box at the top.

And now that I've highjacked this lovely food diary with my long-winded explanation, I shall depart.   ;-)

    •  Oh, thanks! (5+ / 0-)

I try to add the rec tag to others diaries when appropriate but I'm unsure if it is considered gauche to add it to your own diary;)
