  •  Screw the House. Let them do the proposing - they (0+ / 0-)

are in charge now.  If they want to shut it down, let them.

Actually, it really too late - once again - now that we seem to have adopted their narrative.  Now it would be hypocritical for the Senate Dems to vote against the House proposal.

keeping the government running? You can't say "screw them" when they hold power in this fight.

Again, what SHOULD the Democrats have done in a situation like this? They don't have much time until a shutdown occurs.

      •  The same thing we said the last time? (9+ / 0-)

        Make. Them. Own. It.

If they refuse to compromise (as opposed to making demands and having our leaders capitulate) call their bluff.  If they aren't bluffing, take a page from their playbook and stay on topic.  No matter what question we're asked, the answer is always the Republicans shut down government because they were unwilling to compromise on anything.

Giving in every time they take one hostage or another just keeps encouraging them to keep taking more.

if the GOP keeps offering alternatives, and we keep saying "NO!", then we will branded as uncompromising, not them. Regardless of how the media reports it, that's how it will look.

And a shutdown won't help us electorally. People in 1996 voted for Clinton because the economy was good, not because of the shutdown. In fact, Clinton's approval ratings didn't budge during the shutdowns; in fact, if anything, they went down.

What good comes of this? People don't follow politics intently to know which party is doing what.

govt down instead of trying to outdo their stupid ploy.  You assume the Republicans are really willing to shut it down.  I doubt that given how badly that worked for them before.  And if they do, let them take the blame.  Call their bluff.

You see, by trying to beat them on adding budget cuts, the Dems have accepted their game.  If the tables were turned, all you would hear from the republicans is about the Dems wanting to shut down the goverment - they wouldn't even bring up the budget cuts part.  And they wouldn't talk about it if the Repubs wanted to claim it as a defense and would just keep jumping up and down screaming about how the Repubs want to shut it down.

Then the government shuts down, and nobody is happy.

No they can take the blame.  It's not about cuts, it's about letting the govt. operate.
